Bobcats rally past Warriors to start district basketball

Comfort was down 9 points with 5 minutes left but still won

Comfort and Ingram Moore battled to the very end as the two boys basketball teams opened district play last Friday in Ingram.

It was a back-and-forth contest, but the Bobcats came up with a two-point victory over the Warriors.

Comfort trailed 48-39 with 5:02 left but rallied for the 55-53 win.

The Bobcats are 16-8 overall and start district play at 1-0. They hosted Llano on Tuesday and visit Brady on Friday.

Comfort and Ingram were tied 16-16 at the end of one, and then the Bobcats took a one-point lead into halftime at 28-27 after winning the second period, 12-11.

Ingram pulled ahead by the end of the third by winning the third quarter 12-9 and took a 39-37 lead into the final period.

Comfort had its best scoring quarter of the night by dropping in 18 in the final period, while the Warriors tallied 14 to give the Bobcats the two-point win.

Comfort was down 52-49, and Jackson Dear launched a 3-pointer that tied it at 52-52 with 1:33 left.

After a couple of missed shots by both teams, Comfort’s Mario Portugal picked off the pass and found Omar Rivera for an open look and the shot went in to put the Cats ahead, 55-52, with 24 ticks on the clock.

Ingram drew a foul and went 1 for 2 to make it 55-53 with 8 seconds remaining, but Comfort was able to run out the clock from there after the Warriors went for the steal and didn’t foul.

Comfort made nine 3-pointers in the game, while Ingram went 1 for 4 from long range.

Ingram had four players finish in double figures with 14, 13, 13 and 12 points, but only had one other player score, and that was just one point at the free-throw line.

Comfort only had three in double digits but had seven players score in the game.

Jared Valadez led all scorers with 15 points and also had a team-high 8 rebounds to lead Comfort in both categories, while making three 3s.

Jackson Dear added 11 points and hit a big 3, Omar Rivera tallied 10 and drained a pair of 3s, Jovani Zapata and Mario Portugal both netted 6, with Zapata hitting two 3s, Alex Padilla scored 4 and Ricardo Angel chipped in with 3 points after hitting a 3.

Angel dished out 5 assists, Portugal came up with 3 steals and Dear blocked 3 shots.
