Champion closes out first round with win over Rangers

Boerne Champion closed out the first round of district basketball action last Friday at home by hosting Smithson Valley.

The Champion boys were able to keep the Rangers winless in 26-5A and defeated the visitors from Spring Branch, 79-47.

The Chargers end the first round of district at 4-4 and are 17-9 overall. They were off Tuesday and begin the second round of league play at Alamo Heights on Friday.

Champion is tied with Alamo Heights and Kerrville Tivy at 4-4, for fourth place in 26-5A behind Veterans Memorial (7-1), New Braunfels (6-2) and Pieper (5-3).

Chargers coach Chris Adamek suspects a team must get nine district wins to make the playoffs, which means his team has to go 5-3 in the second round.

Smithson Valley had a strong start to last Friday’s game and knocked in five 3-pointers in the opening period to hold an 18-16 lead at the end of the quarter.

But the Rangers struggled in the middle two quarters and only tallied 7 and 8 in the second and third to fall behind.

Champion dropped in 19 in the second and then blew the game open with 28 points in the third quarter for the 62-33 lead.

Gavin Peck, who just set a school scoring record with 45 points last week, tallied 14 in the third quarter alone and Travis Clark added 10 points in the period as they both individually outscored the entire Rangers team that only had 8 points in the third.

The Chargers closed it out by winning the fourth quarter by a bucket, 16-14.

Champion drained a lucky 13 3s in the game and was led by Peck, who finished with 21 points and had four 3s, while Clark also hit four 3s and scored 18 in the game.

Nick Plummer netted 16 and had two 3s, Reid Reddy scored 9 points and hit two 3s in the opening stanza, Nik Georgelos, Ryan Gallardo and Kyle Lintzen all chipped in with 4 points and Jayden Davis made a 3 to finish with 3 points.
