Rangers sweep Chargers in soccer

The Boerne Champion soccer programs tangled with Smithson Valley last Friday in district matches, with the girls at home in Boerne and the boys on the road.

Smithson Valley made it a clean sweep of the Chargers after each squad held Champion to just one goal. The Lady Rangers defeated the Lady Chargers 4-1, and the SV boys beat Champion , 3-1.

Both Charger squads were off Tuesday and back in action Friday against Alamo Heights.

Varsity Girls

Both Champion and Smithson Valley entered Friday’s match with perfect records, but it was the Rangers that kept its undefeated streak intact after they defeated the Lady Chargers, 4-1.

It was 2-0 by halftime and then the Rangers added two more second half goals, while Champion found the back of the net once in the second half.

Grace Johnson connected from about 30 yards out on a kick she lofted past the keeper. Sarah Blakeney had the assist.

The No. 1 state-ranked Lady Rangers improved to 9-0 (1-0) and have not yielded more than one goal in four matches and have pitched shutouts in their other five.

Champion is 5-1 overall and 1-1 in district.

Varsity Boys

The Chargers were on the road and fell to the Rangers, 3-1.

Ethan Souza finished with the team’s only goal on the assist from Will Hankins.

Champion is 1-1 in district and 4-3 overall.

The Chargers were coming off a 7-1 win against Veterans Memorial to start district.

Prior to that they were in the Harlandale tourney where Simon Trevino and Jones Ferguson were named to the all-tournament team.
