Boerne Champion girls basketball coach Jason Sanders picked up career win No. 299 after the Lady Chargers defeated Alamo Heights Friday night in Boerne, 47-39.
Champion improved to 12-18 overall and 4-7 in district. The Lady Chargers were hoping to give Sanders win No. 300 when they visited Boerne High Tuesday. After that, they will host Pieper on Friday.
A late push by the Chargers on Friday helped tilt the game in their direction.
Champion was up 40-38 and then Jenna Koepke hit a 3 with just three minutes left to give Champion some separation at 43-38.
The Mules made it a fourpoint game at 43-39 after going 1 for 2 at the line. Lorena Barreiro then made a free throw for the Chargers to bump it back up to a five-point lead at 44-39.
After a Mules miss on a 3-pointer, Brielle Burdick was fouled and sank both free throws to make it 46-39 with 30 seconds left to basically put the game away.
Kam Edwards added one more free throw for the final point of the game after the Mules missed a shot and fouled her with 10 seconds on the clock.
