There was a packed gym Wednesday night at Champion High School when the Chargers hosted Boerne High in a 26-5A contest.
Wednesday’s outcome before 850 fans definitely had playoff implications as the Greyhounds and Chargers are trying to finish as one of the top four teams in 26-5A to qualify for the postseason.
Champion helped its cause with a 58-36 victory, while Boerne is still alive but has a steeper hill to climb after the loss.
The Chargers are 6-4 in district (19-9 overall) and swept the Greyhounds this year, while Boerne slips to 4-7 in 26-5A (14-15 overall). Champion’s Gavin Peck has been playing lights out lately and recently tallied 45 and 37 points in a couple of games. Peck remained redhot Wednesday and led all scorers with 27 points behind six 3-pointers for the Chargers that made 13 of 25 3s in the game for 52 percent shooting from beyond the arc.
At one point in the first quarter, Peck had 14 of the team’s 15 points to help the Chargers jump out to a 15-8 lead.
Parker Ballenger heated up for the Greyhounds and nailed a couple of 3s, while Slade Salinas made two free throws as part of an 8-0 run, and Boerne was leading 16-15 early in the second quarter.
Reid Reddy fired back with a pair of 3s and the Chargers were back on top, 21-16, and never trailed from there.
Champion only hit four buckets in the second, but they were all 3s as Travis Clark and Reddy nailed a couple from deep to help the Chargers double up the Greyhounds in the stanza (12-6) and take a 27-19 lead into halftime.
Once the third quarter started, the Chargers kept firing from long range and knocked down six more 3s. Peck was feeling it and had three of them, while Reddy made two and Ryan Gallardo also hit one.
Champion carried a 51-31 lead into the final period after winning the third 24-12. Slade Salinas had a solid quarter for the Greyhounds and scored 6 of their 12 points in the third period. He made it to the free-throw line six times and knocked in a 2-point bucket.
When the quarter ended, Peck had 25 points and his final points of the period, a 3-pointer, gave the Chargers their biggest lead of the game at 51-29.
Champion slowed down the game in the fourth quarter to burn some clock and only tallied 7 points, while BHS hit for 5 in the period.
Jayden Davis made a free throw and then came up with a steal and converted a layup to match their biggest lead of the game at 22 points, 58-36.
It stayed there after neither team scored in the final 1:30 of the game.
Peck made two more free throws in the fourth quarter to get his 27 points and was 6 for 10 from deep, Reddy, made four 3s and hit a free throw to score 13, Clark hit two 3s for 6 points, Nik Georgelos had 5 points, Ryan Gallardo hit a 3 and Davis scored 3 for the Chargers.
Salinas paced the Greyhounds with 12 points, Julien Hartman finished with 8, Parker Ballenger made two 3s and scored 6, Bo Pape added 5 points and Noa Sanchez hit the team’s other 3 and finished with 5 points as well.
