A historic downtown Bandera water tower known locally as the “Tin Man” developed a major leak Monday, Jan. 26, near the intersection of Cedar and 11th streets.
City officials reported the issue in a Facebook statement, attributing the failure to the recent stretch of severe cold weather.
According to the notice, the tank would continue to drain until it is fully emptied.
Severe weather dipping temperatures into the teens was cited by city officials as the cause of the leak.
As of press time, no additional comment was provided beyond the city’s posted update, which stated that crews are on site, service was not expected to be interrupted, and residents were asked for patience while the tank finishes draining.
The city said the tower was already offline when the leak began and that water service to customers has not been affected.
Bandera is currently under critical water-use restrictions.
The structure, built in 1947, is considered a local landmark and is visible above the downtown business district. Its nickname comes from its resemblance to the Tin Man character from The Wizard of Oz.
Historical records indicate the elevated tank can hold up to about 50,000 gallons, though officials have not confirmed how much water was inside at the time the leak started.
