Slow start hurts Champion girls against Pieper

Boerne Champion hosted Pieper Friday night in a 26-5A girls basketball game and the Lady Warriors defeated the Lady Chargers, 47-27.

The Chargers fell to 4-9 in district and 12-20 overall. Head coach Jason Sanders has 299 career wins and has three chances to get to 300 this year.

Champion was at New Braunfels Tuesday and hosts No. 1 state-ranked Wagner on Friday. They’ll close out the regular season at Kerrville Tivy on Feb. 10.

In last Friday’s game, Champion had a slow start and fell behind 19-3 by the end of the first quarter. Things were slow for both teams in the second as the Chargers tallied 7 and the Warriors had 6 to give Pieper a 25-10 lead at halftime.

The Chargers won another quarter after they outscored Pieper in the third, 11-9, but were still trailing 34-21, as the game went into the final stanza.

Pieper closed it out by winning the fourth quarter, 13-6, for the 20-point win.

Brielle Burdick led the team in scoring with 9 points, Jenna Koepke had 6 points, Lorena Barreiro added 5, Sage Ramsey and Jordyn Davis both scored 3 and Kam Edwards hit a free throw.
