It took a little extra work, but the Champion boys basketball team was able to defeat Pieper Friday on the road in double overtime.
The Chargers won last Friday’s contest, 62-60, and remained in third place in 26-5A at 7-4. They are 20-9 overall and hosted New Braunfels Tuesday before visiting Wagner on Friday.
There is still a lot of work to do for Champion because three teams – Kerrville Tivy, Pieper and Alamo Heights – are right behind them with six wins and five games left.
In last Friday’s game, Champion and Pieper were tied at the end of regulation and against at the end of the first overtime.
In the second OT, Champion’s Gavin Peck and Reid Reddy both nailed 2-point buckets for a 61-57 lead. The Warriors responded with a 3-pointer to make it a one-point game at 61-60.
Ryan Gallardo was fouled by Pieper and went to the line and went 1 for 2 to make it 62-60. Pieper had one last possession and with time winding down, launched a 3-pointer, about a 30-footer, that missed, and the Chargers prevailed by two points.
Peck paced Champion with 25 points and was 7 for 8 at the free-throw line, Travis Clark was also in double figures with 18 points, Reddy chipped in with 7 points, while Gallardo, Nik Georgelos and William Kliesing all tallied 4 points.
Kliesing grabbed 8 rebounds, Kristopher Lauderdale snagged 6 boards and Peck dished out 4 assists.
