Chargers sweep Patriots in district soccer

The Boerne Champion soccer teams kicked off the second round of district play Friday night against Veterans Memorial, and the Chargers were able to sweep both matches.

Champion challenged Smithson Valley Tuesday and is off Friday. They resume 26-5A action on Feb. 24 against Alamo Heights.

The Champion boys were home Tuesday vs. Smithson Valley, and the Lady Chargers were on the road.

Varsity Girls

The Lady Chargers rolled to their third big win in a row after defeating Veterans Memorial last Friday, 8-0, to sweep the season series.

Champion has won its last three matches by a combined score of 23-0 and begins the second round of 26-5A action at 4-4-1 (8-4-1 overall).

Eight different players scored Champion’s eight goals after Campbell Arendall, Izie Grant, Kylee Holt, Grace Johnson, Bailey Defries, Sydney Simmons Daylynn Carpenter and Jayme Harrell all tallied single goals.

Holt and Johnson recorded 2 assists, while Lily Alejo and Macy O’Dell had single assists in Friday’s match that turned heated and drew a couple of red cards late in the game.

Varsity Boys

Champion picked up its second win against Veterans Memorial after defeating the Patriots last Friday, 5-1. They beat them 7-1 in the first round.

The Chargers improved to 9-6 overall and are 5-4 in district.

Jones Ferguson had a strong match and finished with 2 goals and 2 assists, while Diego Flores, Noah Umbreit and Bryce Knell all tallied single goals.

Bryce Knell also finished with 2 assists in the match.
