Boerne brothers, 11 and 7, making names for themselves on race circuit
Two young Boerne brothers have outpaced the competition in the world of quarter-midget racing, with Connor Guthrie, 11, being crowned Texas state champion in the Senior Honda Division.
Younger brother Ryan Guthrie, 7, also made a name for himself, earning third place after moving up from the rookie division midway through the season, according to a release.
Connor — selected as “Driver of the Year” — was recognized as one of the best young drivers in the state for 2025, officials said this week.
Judged as “consistently fast,” he took first or second place in all his Texas races last year.
The boys’ parents are Sean and Jennifer Guthrie.
Connor runs in two different divisions, Senior Honda and Light 160. Going undefeated in San Antonio and winning all but two races in Austin, Connor was named the Texas Shootout champion in Senior Honda, officials said.
Connor Guthrie 11, left, and Ryan Guthrie, 7, take checkered flags in their quarter midget racers this year.
In the Light 160 division, he finished second in the championship, missing the top spot by just a few points. A racing enthusiast said he faced older, more seasoned drivers, but was able to “find his groove” every time he hit the track.
Ryan earned third place in the Junior Honda championship following his ascension from the rookie ranks in July.
Having only run a partial season, Sean Guthrie said Ryan’s third-place finish is “quite an accomplishment.”
Ryan is the youngest driver of the Junior Honda Division. He won two races and had a handful of second-place finishes, securing him his podium finish in the championship.
Connor is a straight-A sixth grader at Boerne Middle School South while Ryan is in first grade in the Boerne Independent School District.
During the 2025 racing season, young race car drivers have been vying for Texas state championship titles with the Texas Shootout Series, the NASCAR Youth Texas series, racing officials said.
Lone Star Quarter Midget Association and River City Quarter Midget association are sanctioned by NASCAR Youth, holding events at their respective tracks during the year.
Quarter-midget racing — for youths ages 5-16 — is deemed “the breeding ground of champions,” the boys’ family said.
This is the level of racing, their dad said, where young drivers showcase their skills.
The 2026 season begins Feb. 28 in the Lone Start Quarter Midgets in San Antonio.
