Boerne Champion exploded for 8 runs in the bottom of the sixth inning and went on to defeat the Smithson Valley softball team Tuesday at Charger Field.
As the teams entered the bottom of the sixth, the Lady Chargers were trailing 5-2, but responded by sending 11 batters to plate to get its 8 runs and the 10-5 win.
Champion is 1-1 in district (2-1 overall) and is playing in the Abilene Tournament this weekend.
Mylie Parker had quite a game and hit two home runs for the Chargers, one in the first frame, and another during Champion’s rally in the sixth.
The Rangers didn’t help their cause after they committed 5 errors in the game. Two of those fielding miscues happened in the sixth during Champion’s rally and the Chargers took advantage.
Two errors against Champion’s first three batters in the frame helped the Chargers score a run and make it 5-3.
A dropped third strike put Tatum Cruz at first and loaded the bases with two outs. A single from Aidan Kavanagh to right field pushed in a run and it was 5-4.
Leadoff hitter Brylyn Thornburg came up and smacked a double to right and scored 3 runs to give the Chargers the 7-5 lead, and they weren’t done.
Torin Tucker singled to drive in another run and make it 8-5 and then Parker hit her second homer of the game to bring in two more runs and bump the lead to 10-5.
Champion scored 7 of their runs with two outs in the inning.
The Rangers went down in order in the top of the seventh to end it.
Besides hitting two homers, Parker picked up the win from the circle after she yielded 5 hits, 4 earned runs, 2 walks and struck out 7 on 111 pitches.
Parker and Thornburg both finished with 3 RBI each, Parker scored 3 runs and Thornburg crossed home plate twice, while Tucker singled, scored and collected 2 RBI.
