FIRST ROUND PLAYOFFS Champion vs. Leander at Buda Johnson, Tuesday, 6:30 p.m.
Boerne Champion defeated Smithson Valley Tuesday night in boys basketball and moved into second place in the 26-5A standings with its 70-36 victory.
The Chargers and Unicorns both finished at 12-4 in district play, but Champion swept New Braunfels this year to take second behind district champ Veterans Memorial (13-3). Alamo Heights snagged the final spot up for grabs at 9-7.
Champion (25-9) faces Leander Tuesday at Buda Johnson, 6:30 p.m., to open the postseason.
The Lions were the fourth-place team in 25-5A and went 14-17 this year and 9-5 in district behind Glenn (14-0), Cedar Park (10-4) and Rouse (9-5).
Champion and Leander will play in the 5A-DI bracket, and the Chargers took the No. 1 seed ahead of New Braunfels, who will face Glenn.
Veterans Memorial and Alamo Heights will go to the 5A-DII bracket.
The Chargers knocked down 13 3-pointers in Tuesday’s game and were led by Nik Georgelos, who had 17 points and made five 3s, while Gavin Peck added 14 points and Travis Clark chipped in with 8. Both Peck and Clark hit two 3s each.
