Boerne Champion had a strong start to its 2026 baseball season after the Chargers picked up a 10-0 run rule victory over Veterans Memorial on Tuesday.
Champion starts the year and district play at 1-0 and was entered in the Northside Tournament this weekend and hosts Smithson Valley on Tuesday.
The Chargers came out of the gate swinging and tallied 4 runs in the top of the first frame. They added a single run in the second for the 5-0 lead and then pushed in 4 more runs in the fourth to make it 9-0.
Champion tacked on another run in the sixth and when the Patriots couldn’t answer in the bottom of the frame, the mercy rule kicked in.
The Chargers finished with 8 hits, 4 of them doubles. Owen Kuhl doubled and singled and scored 3 runs, Austin Garritano knocked out 2 singles, took 2 walks, drove in 2 runs and scored twice, Jaedyn Yamaguchi doubled and picked up 2 RBI, Brody Bendele doubled, picked up 2 RBI and scored 2 runs, Cal Isley singled and drove in a run, while Blake Ott singled scored and collected an RBI.
Ethan Coleman went 4.2 innings on the mound and scattered 2 hits, walked 2 batters and struck out 9 to get the win. Kuhl finished it out and threw the final 1.1 innings and gave up 1 hit and struck out 3 as the duo combined for a 3-hit shutout.
