AUSTIN — The Boerne Champion girls swim/dive team repeated as state champions after they tallied 218 points to beat Frisco Reedy (190) for the 5A title Saturday in Austin.
Champion won six gold medals, two in relay and four individual gold, and picked up a silver medal to help secure the title.
Chargers head coach Scott Slay said last year’s state title was great, but to do it in consecutive years when other teams were gunning for them this season is probably more impressive.
“This one is super special; it’s amazing,” he said. “Back-to-back is hard to do, and it’s just a testament to these girls.”
Kate Canales and Cora Skoog both earned four gold medals, two in relay and two in individual events.
The 200-medley and 400-medley relays (Karly Whitehead, Canales, Addison Graham and Skoog) both set 5A state records to win gold.
Canales set a 5A state record in one of her individual events, the 100 breaststroke, and also took first in the 100 butterfly. She was named the 5A swimmer of the meet.
Canales, just a junior, was already thinking about next year.
“I’m happy with how I did today, winning two (individual) gold medals is something to be proud of but next year I’m looking forward to coming back stronger and faster,” she said.
Skoog picked up gold in the 50 freestyle and 100 freestyle, while Whitehead earned silver in the 100 backstroke.
Boys
On the boys side, Will Harrison earned a couple of silver medals after he finished second in the 50 free and 100 free.
The Champion boys finished 10th in the final team standings with 77 points. College Station A&M Consolidated won the meet with 257.5 points.
