Greyhounds tally 5 runs in sixth to top Tivy

Boerne High broke open a 0-0 game by scoring 5 runs in the bottom of the sixth inning and went on to defeat visiting Kerrville Tivy Tuesday night in a district baseball game, 5-2.

The Greyhounds are 2-0 in district (5-1 overall) entering this weekend’s Comal tournament. BHS travels to Tivy on Tuesday to close out their series with the Antlers.

Both teams scored in bunches in Tuesday’s game at Greyhound Field. BHS pushed in all five of its runs in the sixth thanks to pitching issues by the Antler arms. The Hounds only had one hit in the inning, but Tivy gave up six walks in the frame, and Boerne took advantage.

It was 4-0 thanks to six walks issued to the first eight BHS batters in the sixth. One batter struck out and the other, Asher Wren, singled to push in a run. Jackson Grimes later picked up an RBI on a sac fly to make it 5-0 before Tivy could get out of the inning.

The Antlers came up in the top of the seventh and made a little noise. Tivy strung together a hit batter, single and a double, and it was 5-2 with only one out, but the BHS defense buckled down to close it out with a strike out and a line out to third base.

Boerne finished with 4 hits and was outhit, 6-4, but Tivy pitching gave up nine walks. Wren singled and scored, Otis Skubal singled and picked up an RBI, Grimes also singled and drove in a run and Colton Shaver singled and scored.

Grimes earned the win from the mound and went six innings after throwing 88 pitches. He fanned 11, scattered 4 hits, didn’t give up a walk or a run. Grimes has struck out 30 batters in two district games so far.

Braden Ramirez pitched in the seventh and yielded 2 hits, 2 runs, no walks and struck out 2.
