Rangers edge Charger baseball team, 3-1

The Boerne Champion baseball team suffered its first loss of the season after they were defeated by Smithson Valley Tuesday in Boerne.

SV scored three runs in the second and held on for the 3-1 win over the Chargers. Champion is 1-1 in district (5-1-1 overall) and played in the Comal tournament this weekend and then plays at Smithson Valley Tuesday to close out their series with the Rangers.

Champion’s only offense came in the first inning after Austin Garritano belted a homer to right field for the 1-0 lead. It held until the next inning when the Rangers answered with three runs.

A double, two singles, a walk and an error allowed the Rangers to take the 3-1 lead.

Both teams put runners on after that, but neither side could push in a run.

The Rangers finished with 7 hits, while the Chargers had 4 hits. Garritano homered, Owen Kuhl doubled and singled, and Brody Bendele singled.

Ethan Coleman went the distance for the Chargers on the hill and scattered 7 hits, gave up only 1 earned run, had 3 walks and struck out 7 on 88 pitches.
