Rating the fast-food fixes

EDITOR’S NOTE: The Boerne Star meets twice monthly with Kendall County Health Inspector Brenda Bell and her staff, to bring us our newest feature, “Where Boerne Eats: A Closer Look.”

Diners all love their fastfood fixes, and there are plenty of locales with tasty fare to visit in Kendall County.

This week, county Health Inspector David Sueltenfuss visited a few favorites to note what was good and what needed improvement.

Wendy’s 1242 S. Main St.

Hours: 10 a.m. to midnight Sunday-Saturday

Wendy’s has plenty to offer – the chocolate Frosty, spicy chicken nuggets, chili and cheesy bacon cheeseburgers.

During Sueltenfuss’s stop, he made a few observations: The door gasket on a drive-thru cooler was in poor repair; one employee did not wear a hair restraint; the floor under the racks in the walk-in freezer needed cleaning; a heavy grease buildup under the grills; floor grout below the top of the tiles; food buildup on the floors; and the previous inspection was not posted.

The staff got to work on making corrections.

One of the newest offerings are the Crazy Puffs, which are bite-size pizza bites served with a preference of sauce.

During this stop, Sueltenfuss noted the following: Chicken wings at the incorrect temperature; ready-to-use pizza pans had food debris; one food handler did not wash hands; no certified food manager was on duty; two food-handler certificates were unavailable; unmarked/undated chicken wings in prepped cooler; a propped-open back door; beard restraints not worn by two employees; food found on the floor; single-service straws stored on an unclean shelf; dishwashing room floor not clean; several broken tiles; and a broken cabinet by the sink.

Chicken Express, 42 U.S. 87 Hours: 10:30 a.m. to 10 p.m.

Sunday-Saturday

Chicken Express serves fried chicken including spicy chicken tenders. With family meal options, the chain offers several signature sides: mashed potatoes, bread rolls, fried okra, macaroni and cheese, corn on the cob, coleslaw, corn nuggets, fried pickles, cheese sticks, hush puppies and crinkle-cut fries. Sweet tea by the gallon is also available.

Sueltenfuss left the on-site manager a list of observations: Gravy being stored at the incorrect temperature; mildew in the ice machine; the wall behind the walk-in cooler deteriorating; one employee not wearing a beard restraint; the inside of a fryer, cooler and freezer were unclean; an air vent and ceiling above the sink compartment were not clean.
