Chargers post 5-1 mark at baseball tourney

Boerne Champion won its first five games at the Comal ISD Baseball Tournament before dropping its only contest at the very end to finish 5-1 at the event.

The Chargers are 10- 2- 1 overall and resumed district play Tuesday at Smithson Valley and are scheduled to play in the Leander Tournament this weekend.

Champion opened with a 7-6 win over Wimberley and had 9 hits in the game. The Chargers scored 5 runs in the first and held on for the victory.

Austin Garritano and Cal Isley both finished with 2 hits and Garritano scored twice. Blake Ott doubled and drove in a run and Jaedyn Yamaguchi doubled and picked up an RBI.

Owen Kuhl, Parker Davis and Isley all threw in the game, and Davis picked up the win.

Later in the day, the Chargers defeated El Paso Socorro, 11-3.

It was 5- 3 before Champion busted it open with 6 runs in the bottom of the fifth.

The Chargers had 10 hits, 9 of them singles, along with a triple from Austin Garritano, who collected 2 RBI. Lyndon Austin hit 2 singles, scored 2 runs and drove in 4 runs, Garland Whitehead singled, drove in 2 runs and scored once, while Caiden Cruz and Brody Bendele both crossed home plate twice.

Caleb Brown went 4 innings and picked up the win after striking out 5 and scattering 3 hits, while Jaxson Denman retired the side in one inning of work.

Up next, the Chargers edged the Eagle Pass Eagles, 4-3, after falling behind 3-0. Champion scored 4 runs in the third through fifth frames.

Austin Garritano doubled and singled, pushed in a run and scored a run, Blake Ott doubled, while Owen Kuhl scored once.

Ott tossed 4 innings, while Kooper DeRusse and Garritano both threw one inning, with DeRusse earning the win and Garritano getting the save.

Later on Friday in a battle of Charger teams, Champion defeated Churchill, 8-2. It was tied 2-2 before Champion scored the final 6 runs of the game. The Chargers had 8 hits, including 2 doubles from Austin Garritano and another from Zak Al- Arashi, who both picked up 2 RBI each.

Garland Whitehead singled, drove in a run and scored twice, while Cal Isley plated 2 runs.

Brody Eisert went all 7 innings on the mound to get the win and gave up 6 hits, 2 runs, no walks and struck out 5.

On Saturday, the Chargers defeated Sotomayor, 4-3, behind 5 hits.

Brody Bendele doubled and drove in a run, Blake Ott hit 2 singles and picked up 2 RBI, while Zak Al-Arashi and Owen Kuhl both singled.

Lyndon Austin crossed home plate twice and Austin Garritano also scored a run.

Parker Davis, Jaxson Denman and Cal Isley all threw in the game with Davis picking up the win after going 4.2 innings and only giving up 1 hit and striking out 2.

The Chargers closed out the tourney with a 6-5 loss to Dripping Springs.

Champion was trailing 5-0 and rallied, but the Tigers added another run to get the one-run win.

Brody Bendele tripled and scored, Lyndon Austin and Blake Ott both hit 2 singles, while Zak Al-Arashi doubled.

Austin Garritano, Kooper DeRusse and Caiden Cruz all pitched in the game with Cruz going the longest at 3 frames, while Garritano went 2.1 innings.
