The Boerne Champion soccer squads challenged New Braunfels last Friday as the regular season starts to wind down.

Both Champion teams are fighting for playoff spots, and the boys team helped their cause with a victory over the Unicorns in 26-5A where the top four teams advance.

The Chargers have Wagner and Kerrville Tivy left on the schedule to close out the regular season this week.

Varsity Boys

Champion improved its postseason chances with a 1-0 victory over New Braunfels last Friday at Charger Field.

The Chargers moved up a couple of spots in the 26-5A standings after Friday’s win and jumped from fifth to third.

Emilio Linaje knocked in the only goal of the night last Friday and it went in favor of the Chargers.

Champion (12-8 overall) is third at 8-6 in district play behind Pieper (11-0-4) and New Braunfels (10-2-2), both of which have earned playoff spots.

Smithson Valley (7-5-2), Boerne High (7-5-2) and Kerrville Tivy (6-6-2) are right behind the Chargers in the standings. It’ll likely come down to the last match of the regular season before the two remaining playoff spots are clinched.

The Chargers hosted Wagner on Tuesday afternoon because of facility issues on their campus and then Champion hosts Kerrville on Friday, 7:15 p.m.

Varsity Girls

The Lady Chargers are still in the mix despite last Friday’s 2-0 loss at New Braunfels.

Champion (10-7-1 overall) slips to 6-7-1 after Friday and sits in sixth place. Smithson Valley (14-0) has the district title locked up; Pieper (11-2-2) is second, followed by New Braunfels (9-3-2), Boerne (7-5-2) and Alamo Heights (6-5-3) and then Champion.

The Chargers must win out, need Alamo Heights to lose to New Braunfels and need Boerne to lose both of its two remaining games, or tie one and lose the other. It’ll all shake out by the end of this week.

Champion hosted Wagner on Tuesday night and will visit Kerrville Tivy on Friday.

Boerne High

Both Greyhound teams were off last Friday and resumed district action this week with two matches. The Greyhounds faced Pieper on Tuesday and close out the regular season Friday against New Braunfels.

The BHS boys are tied for fourth with Smithson Valley at 7-5-2, while the Boerne girls have the same district record and are in fourth place.

The boys played early Tuesday at Pieper and the girls match at BISD Stadium wasn’t played until 7:15 p.m. The boys host New Braunfels Friday, and the girls visit the Unicorns that day.
