70th anniversary
BOERNE — On March 17, St. Patrick’s Day, longtime Boerne residents James “Jim” and Mary Beatty will celebrate their 70th wedding anniversary, a “platinum” milestone reached by fewer than 1% of married couples worldwide.
The Beattys have lived in the same Boerne home for more than 50 years, a home Mary designed and Jim built himself as general contractor.
They raised three daughters there, all graduates of Boerne High School, and now enjoy watching their grandchildren carry forward that legacy.
Their story, however, is far more than longevity.
Just a few months after their wedding, Jim survived a catastrophic steel mill accident that left him hospitalized for 4-5 months with severe burns. As a child, he narrowly escaped being struck by a train.
At age 89, he survived a devastating ladder fall that required multiple surgeries and months of rehabilitation.
Mary is a two-time breast cancer survivor, including a Stage 4 diagnosis. After enduring chemotherapy, radiation and major surgery — and later facing cancer again nearly two decades later — she remains cancer- free today. She often says, “God wasn’t done with me yet.”
After moving to San Antonio, Texas, back in 1962, with no family connections, the Beattys built a health food business in San Antonio long before vitamins and supplements became mainstream, eventually operating four stores while raising their family.
Their marriage has been rooted in faith, resilience, humor and hard work — a true testament to enduring commitment. As Scripture says, “A cord of three strands is not quickly broken.”
