The Comfort High softball team opened district play last Friday and dropped a shootout with Llano, 16-15. Before that, the Deer fell to Hondo, 16-15.
Comfort hosted Llano on Tuesday to close out their series with the Yellowjackets. The Deer are 11-11 overall and 0-1 in district.
Vs. Llano
Friday’s contest was only 1-0 going into the third, but both teams woke up and turned in big innings. Llano scored 8 runs in the third and Comfort tallied 9 runs in the fifth.
Comfort took a 15-12 lead into the bottom of the seventh, but Llano rallied in its last at bat with 4 runs to win it, 16-15.
Comfort outhit the Yellowjackets, 12-11, and was led by Moorea Davis, who finished with 4 hits, including 2 triples and 2 singles, 3 RBI and 3 runs scored, McKenzie Pankratz hit a double and 2 singles, drove in 3 runs and scored 2 runs, Taygan Rust hit 2 singles, scored 2 runs and picked up an RBI, while Jordan Judkins crossed home plate 3 times.
Ella Thiele went 4 innings in the circle and gave up 8 hits, struck out 5, while Paige Werner threw the final 2.2 innings and scattered 6 hits, fanned 4 and yielded 2 walks.
Vs. Hondo
Comfort High was on the road for a non-district softball game at Hondo on March 6. The Lady Owls played well at home and defeated the Deer in five innings, 16-6.
Comfort scored in four of five innings at Hondo, but the Owls did the same thing and scored more runs during their at bats than the Deer did.
Comfort finished with 11 hits in the game but just didn’t produce enough runs to keep up with the Owls team, which only had 3 more hits than the Deer at 14.
Mariah McCollough belted a home run and a single for the Deer and picked up 2 RBI, Anna Munoz knocked out 2 doubles, drove in a run and scored once, Taygan Rust hit 2 singles and drove in a run, Kippy Sterling singled, scored twice and had an RBI, Moorea Davis singled and pushed in a run, Jordan Judkins singled and scored, while McKenzie Pankratz scored a run.
Ella Thiele went 2.2 innings in the circle, gave up 5 hits, 5 runs, 4 walks and fanned 4, while Paige Werner scattered 9 hits, yielded 6 walks and fanned 1 in 2.1 innings of work.
