One goal separated the Boerne High and Alamo Heights girls’ soccer teams in their two district matches against each other, and that one goal was enough to send the Lady Mules to the playoffs.
Both Boerne and Alamo Heights finished 8-5-3 in district play and tied for fourth, but the Mules took the last spot up for grabs by virtue of the tiebreaker after they beat the Lady Greyhounds (1-0 on Jan. 30) and tied BHS (2-2 on March 3).
The tie was a wash, but the 1-0 win over BHS was the difference. After Alamo Heights beat Wagner last Thursday (8-0), Boerne had to beat New Braunfels last Friday, but the Unicorns played the Lady Hounds to a 3-3 draw, and the tie helped the Mules snag fourth place.
Smithson Valley (160), Pieper (11-3-2), New Braunfels (9-4-3) and Alamo Heights (8-5-3) will represent the district going into the playoffs that start this week.
Boerne (8-5-3), Champion (8-7-1), Kerrville Tivy (4-12), Veterans Memorial (1-15) and Wagner (1-15) rounded out the district.
Varsity Boys
The BHS boys closed out the season with a 2-1 loss to New Braunfels last Friday. The Hounds dropped their last five matches, three of those by one goal, as injuries took a toll, and they ended their year at 7-7-2 in 26-5A.
Boerne was 9-8-2 overall and finished fifth in the final district standings. Pieper (12-0-4), New Braunfels (12-2-2), Champion (10-6) and Smithson Valley (9-5-2) advance to the playoffs.
Boerne (7-7-2), Kerrville Tivy (6-8-2), Alamo Heights (5-8-3), Wagner (2-12-2) and Veterans Memorial (0-15-1) rounded out the district.
