After a break of 14 days, the Geneva School of Boerne baseball team was back on the diamond Tuesday and hosted Schertz John Paul II in its district opener.
The Eagles came up short on Tuesday and were doubled up by the Guardians 8-4 to start district at 0-1. Geneva (8-6 overall) visited Holy Cross on Friday and hosts Corpus Christi John Paul II on Tuesday.
JP II never trailed in Tuesday’s contest and was up 2-1 by the end of the first inning. The Guardians scored 3 runs in the third and 2 more in the fourth for the 7-2 lead after the Eagles plated another run in the third.
Geneva cut into the lead in the fifth by scoring 2 runs and it was 7-4, but the Eagles were kept off the board the rest of the way, while the Guardians added an insurance run in the sixth to make it 8-4.
Geneva outhit JP II, 8-6, but also committed 4 errors that led to 4 unearned runs.
Bryce Hanover, Gray Bruner and Robert Jons all doubled for the Eagles and Hanover picked up an RBI, while Bruner added 2 singles to his double, scored twice, took a walk and drove in a run.
Brady Chandler singled, walked twice and scored a run, Harris Priesmeyer knocked out 2 singles and Levi McPherson crossed home plate once.
Hanover started on the hill and gave up 5 hits, 3 earned runs, 3 walks and struck out 3 in three innings of work. McPherson also pitched three innings, yielded a hit, 1 earned run, 4 walks and fanned 1, while Crockett Srp tossed an inning and only faced three batters.
