Chargers hold off late rally by Mules

Alamo Heights made Tuesday’s district baseball game with Boerne Champion interesting after the Mules fell behind 8-0 but rallied to cut the lead in half before the Chargers prevailed.

The Mules scored all 4 of those runs in their last at bat, but the Chargers still managed to double up their rivals, 8-4.

Champion improved to 3-1 in district (17-2-1 overall) and hosted Alamo Heights Friday to close out their series.

The Chargers broke open a scoreless game with a single run in the third. They added 4 in the fourth and pushed in 3 more in the sixth for the 8-0 lead going into the seventh.

In the bottom of the seventh inning, Alamo Heights took advantage of three doubles, two Chargers errors and a single and it was 8-4 with one out and runners at first and third and the tying run on deck.

But Champion’s defense came through after pitcher Owen Kuhl induced an infield double play to end the game.

Ethan Coleman actually started on the mound for the Chargers and pitched a solid game. He scattered 2 hits, walked 2 and fanned 12 before leaving after sixth innings.

In the seventh, Parker Davis faced two batters, while Kuhl came in to close it out and struck out a batter.

Brody Bendele, Brody Eisert and Garland Whitehead all doubled, while Bendele drove in 2 runs, Eisert walked twice and scored 2 runs and Whitehead walked and crossed home plate two times.

Kuhl hit 2 singles and picked up 2 RBI, Cal Isley also had 2 hits and scored a run, Jaedyn Yamaguchi walked, pushed in a run and scored once and Jaxson Denman walked and plated a run and Ethan Jensen scored a run.
