GENERAL NOTICE

Why I stand for Republican values, ideals

WRITE OF CENTER

I have been a proud resident of Boerne, Texas, for the past six years. I was born in Cuba and legally immigrated to the United States at age 12 as part of the Freedom Flights, an American effort that allowed thousands of Cuban dissidents to escape communist rule.

My family came to the United States at a great cost. When my parents applied for the Freedom Flights, the Cuban government punished them severely. My father was imprisoned in a concentration camp for three years simply because we sought to leave. We lost everything. The government confiscated our home, our bank accounts and our possessions.

When we arrived in Miami in May 1969, we had nothing. But we had something far more valuable: hope. We believed America offered the opportunity to rebuild our lives in a country defined by liberty, hard work and personal responsibility.

I became a naturalized U.S. citizen as soon as I was eligible at age 18. Standing with hundreds of others from around the world, I proudly swore allegiance to this nation that had welcomed us.

Because I grew up in a country where citizens had no voice in selecting their leaders, I have never taken that privilege lightly. I have voted in every election since becoming eligible and have served on jury duty whenever called. Civic participation is not just a duty to me, it is a privilege.

Three pillars shape my personal values: faith, family and freedom. My parents instilled these principles in me from the time I was a child, and they continue to guide how I live and view public life.

Before choosing a political party, I examined the platforms of both major parties to see which best aligned with those values. For me, the choice was clear. The Republican Party’s platform most closely reflected the principles that shaped my upbringing and my experience as an immigrant who came to this country seeking liberty.

First is faith. The Republican platform strongly defends religious liberty — the right of Americans to freely practice their faith and to bring their beliefs into the public square without fear of government interference.

Second is family. Republicans emphasize the importance of the family as the foundation of a healthy society. The platform affirms the sanctity of human life and supports policies that strengthen the family unit.

Third is freedom. The Republican Party advocates a limited government, a strong Constitution, and the protection of individual liberties. This includes defending the Second Amendment, promoting free markets, reducing excessive regulation and lowering taxes. The platform also emphasizes secure borders and a foreign policy built on peace through strength.

At its core, the Republican vision places trust in the people rather than expanding the reach of federal bureaucracy.

Before moving to Texas, I spent most of my life in California. I watched firsthand as that once vibrant, opportunity-filled state gradually transformed into a one-party progressive political system, which makes it hard for ordinary families to thrive.

That experience shaped my decision to leave. In a sense, I feel that I am a refugee twice; first from Cuba and later from California.

To me, Texas still embodies the spirit of independence, opportunity and personal freedom that drew my family to America in the first place. But that future cannot be taken for granted.

We should never assume that Texas is immune from the political trends that have transformed other states. The freedoms we enjoy here endure only if citizens remain engaged, informed and willing to participate in the political process.

That is why I share my story whenever I can. My journey from communist Cuba to the freedoms of America has taught me that liberty is precious and fragile. It must be protected by every generation.

For me, supporting Republican values is not simply about politics. It is about preserving the principles that allowed my family, and millions like us, to find hope and opportunity in the United States.

If we want Texas to remain a place where freedom and opportunity flourish, we must show up, speak out and vote accordingly. The future of this great state depends on it.
