Champion sweeps Unicorns, moves into first place in 26-5A

Basically, Tuesday’s baseball game between Boerne Champion and New Braunfels came down to one inning.

With the contest deadlocked at 0-0 through four innings, the Chargers broke the ice with a 3-run fifth frame for all the offense they would need.

Champion tacked on 3 more insurance runs in the sixth and went on to shut out the Unicorns 6-0 behind a two-hit pitching performance from Ethan Coleman.

The Chargers and Unicorns played Thursday and the Chargers rallied for the 4-3 win after falling behind 3-0 in the first inning.

Champion is 9-2 in district (23-3-1 overall). They were scheduled to play Veterans Memorial Saturday (weather permitting) and have a series with Kerrville Tivy this coming week.

If the Chargers win out, they’ll be district champs, and head coach Ben Woodchick said that is the goal.

“In this district, it’s all about getting in, and we’re getting close to that,” he said. “If we’re wanting that district title, the guaranteed route is to win out, so why not?”

Both pitchers were stingy early on Tuesday and weren’t giving up much, but in the fifth, the Chargers strung together a two-out rally. Cal Isley walked, and Brody Bendele doubled to bring in Isley for the 1-0 lead.

Garland Whitehead singled to bring in Bendele and then Austin Garritano singled to score Whitehead and it was 3-0 as Champion tagged Unicorns starter Tate Moore with three solid line drives to center field after the walk to Isley, forcing a pitching change.

“Our guys did a good job of making adjustments; they communicate well and start to figure guys out as the game gets going,” Woodchick said. “We finally started getting a couple of big hits and things started to roll a little bit.”

Another mini rally in the sixth padded Champion’s lead with 3 insurance runs. A Blake Ott double, followed by three walks, a couple of wild pitches and an error, allowed the Chargers to make it 6-0.

The Unicorns went down swinging and a two-out triple in the top of the seventh put a runner at third for their first hit off Coleman since the second inning.

Coleman fanned the next batter for his eighth strike out of the game and earned the complete game shutout on 95 pitches. Coleman only walked 2, gave up 2 hits and didn’t allow a run to lower his ERA to 0.94 over 45.2 innings pitched.

Ott doubled and singled, Bendele doubled and Garland Whitehead walked twice for the Chargers team that finished with 6 hits.
