Boerne Champion kept up with the playoff-bound Pieper softball team for several innings last Tuesday at home, but the Warriors pulled away late by scoring 11 runs in its last three at bats to defeat the Chargers.
Tuesday’s contest was tied 4-4 through four innings, but Pieper’s 11 runs in three innings blew it open and gave the Warriors a 15-4 win in seven innings.
Champion played New Braunfels Thursday after the game was moved up a day because of the expected bad weather on Friday and lost 8-0.
The Chargers are 4-10 in district and 9-12 overall. For more on Thursday’s game, see the Wednesday online edition of the Boerne Star.
Pieper had a fast start on Tuesday and tallied 4 runs in the top of the first inning. It stayed there until the second when the Chargers tied it up.
Brylyn Thornburgh singled and scored after Emily Thomas hit a ball that was misplayed to make it 4-1. Cora Cude and Torin Tucker then singled to load the bases with two outs.
From there, Teagan Rogers cleared the bases with a line drive to right field that bounced off the fielder’s glove and brought in 3 runs to tie it up at 4-4.
But the Chargers didn’t score after that and came up empty in the last five innings, while the Warriors were just getting warmed up. Pieper tallied 3 in the fifth, 3 in the sixth and 5 more in the seventh to pull away.
Champion recorded 7 hits, 3 from the bat of Torin Tucker, while Rogers, Mylie Parker, Thornburgh and Cude had 1 hit each. Tucker, Thornburgh, Thomas and Cude all scored once.
Parker threw 5.1 innings and gave up 7 hits, 4 earned runs, 4 walks and struck out 4, while Anna Hurst tossed the final 1.1 innings and yielded 2 hits, 4 runs and 4 walks.
