Five tennis players from Boerne High and another from Champion qualified for this year’s 5A state tennis tournament after their performances at the Region IV-5A tourney held in Corpus Christi last weekend.
This year’s 5A state tourney will be held May 7-8 at the Northside Tennis Center in Helotes at O’Connor High School.
State qualifiers for the Greyhounds are Aidan Cebe in boys singles, Paytin Johndrow and Justin Barraza in mixed doubles and Gavin Cebe and Nick Dube in boys doubles, while Alexandra Morris qualified in girls singles for the Chargers.
Aidan Cebe never dropped more than one game in any of his four matches and captured the regional title with a 6-1, 6-1 victory over Jacob Cooper of Liberty Hill to win the region.
In mixed doubles, Gavin Cebe and Nick Dube won all four of their matches in straight sets and defeated Zachary Graham and Brycen Moralez of Flour Bluff in the finals, 6-2, 6-3, to claim the regional title.
Barraza and Johndrow finished third at regionals to advance to state in mixed doubles. The duo won their first match in straight sets, 6-0, 6-0, and then won a tough one in the quarterfinals, 7-5, 4-6, 6-4.
Barraza and Johndrow had another three-set match in the semifinals and fell to Brendan Stafford and Lily Tobin of Liberty Hill, 7-6, 6-7, 6-1, to finish third and qualify for state.
Morris placed third in girls singles and breezed in her first two matches before she was defeated in the semis by eventual regional champ Victoria Torres of Flour Bluff, 6-4, 6-2, to qualify for state.
