Cedar Park edged the Boerne High baseball team in Thursday’s Game 1 of their scheduled best-of-three series.
The Timberwolves broke a 4-4 tie with two runs in the fifth and held on for the 6-4 victory for the 1-0 series lead.
Game 2 was scheduled for Friday in New Braunfels and a third game, if needed, was to take place Saturday in Leander.
Boerne High (19-12) took the early lead with a 3-run home run by Jackson Grimes in the first inning. Jake Perez and Colton Shaver singled and then Grimes knocked it out of the park for the 3-0 advantage.
Two innings later, Cedar Park (15-15-1) took the lead with one swing after Dominic Naylor blasted a grand slam over the left-field fence and the Timberwolves were on top 4-3.
The Greyhounds tied it in the fourth after Otis Skubal walked and Perez doubled to move Skubal to third. A wild pitch allowed Skubal to scoot home and tie it up at 4-4.
It stayed there until the bottom of the fifth when Cedar Park used a single and two walks to load the bases. An error allowed the Timberwolves to plate two runs and hold a 6-4 lead.
BHS still had two more chances to try and answer and put two on in the sixth and two in the seventh but couldn’t get the timely hit needed to bring in any of the base runners.
Grimes went five innings and tossed 103 pitches. He gave up 4 hits, 4 earned runs, 7 walks and struck out 6 batters.
Kepa Kanae faced two batters, while Braden Ramirez threw an inning and didn’t give up a hit, walk or run and fanned one.
BHS doubled up the Timberwolves in the hit department, 8-4, and were led at the plate by Grimes with his 3-run homer. Perez doubled and singled and scored a run, Ronnie Scarbrough doubled and singled and Cale Francis recorded 2 singles.
Skubal took 2 walks and plated a run, and Shaver singled and scored.
