Champion faces Southwest in the second round of the 5A-DI baseball playoffs and it’ll be a matchup of district champions.
The Chargers won 26-5A at 13-3, and the Dragons took 28-5A with an impressive record of 16-0.
Second-round action between Champion (29-5-1) and Southwest (29-2) is at Northside Field 3 on Thursday and Friday at 7 p.m. and if needed, on Saturday at noon.
Champion coach Ben Woodchick said the Dragons know how to win.
“They’ve won a ton of games and went undefeated in district,” he said. “They hit well throughout the lineup and do a good job handling their bat, bunting, moving runners and are good two-out hitters. They throw strikes and play great defense.”
The Chargers are no strangers to winning and have won three district titles in a row. Before that, Champion went to the state tourney in 2023 when they weren’t a district champ and finished third in district but peaked by playoff time.
Champion is coming off a three-game victory over Buda Hays in the first round, 6-2, 6-8, 2-1, while the Dragons swept Brackenridge in the first round, 4-3, 10-1.
Woodchick said the Dragons have a lot of experienced players.
“They are returning a successful team and most starters are multi-year starters, who have had success and know how to win,” he said.
