BUDA — With a Game 1 loss to Cedar Park (6-4)
BUDA — With a Game 1 loss to Cedar Park (6-4), the Boerne High baseball team needed to sweep the Timberwolves on Saturday at Buda Johnson.
The Greyhounds won Game 2 over Cedar Park, 2-1, to force a Game 3, but BHS came up short in the decisive third game, 5-2, to end their season with a record of 20-13.
Boerne will graduate six seniors this year, Ronnie Scarbrough, Eli Srp, Jake Perez, Colton Shaver, Otis Skubal and Jackson Grimes.
Greyhounds coach Geoff Curtin said the seniors made many contributions to the program over the years.
“They’ve been a vital part of our program for the last couple of years,” he said. “I appreciate the time and work they’ve put into the game, and they made history by being the first 5A playoff baseball team from Boerne High.”
Game 3 BHS 2, Cedar Park 5
Boerne didn’t go down without a fight after falling behind 5-0. In the bottom of the seventh, the Greyhounds loaded the bases with one out and managed to bring in a couple of runs.
The bases were still juiced with two outs, but the Timberwolves fielded a grounder hit up the middle and recorded the out at second to end it, 5-2.
Cedar Park took a 1-0 lead in the first and pushed in 4 more runs in the fourth for the 5-0 lead.
Before the seventh inning, the Hounds had runners on base in four of the six previous innings but just couldn’t produce a run as the big hit eluded them.
Finally in the seventh, they started to roll a bit. After a pop up for an out, Cale Francis, EJ Goosby and Otis Skubal all walked to load the bases.
Jake Perez came up and singled and it was 5-1. The next batter struck out to make it two outs, but the bases were still full. Jackson Grimes was hit by a pitch to bring in another run and the lead had been trimmed to 5-2.
But the rally ended there as the next BHS batter hit a grounder that was fielded by the second baseman on a fielder’s choice to record the third out and end it.
Both teams finished with 5 hits, and Perez had 2 hits, Shaver and Scarbrough both singled and Francis doubled. Goolsby and Francis both scored, while Perez and Grimes picked up RBIs.
Shaver tossed an inning and gave up 2 hits, 1 run, 1 walk and he struck out a batter, while Braden Ramirez went 6 innings and yielded 3 hits, no earned runs, 3 walks and he fanned one.
Game 2 Boerne 2, Cedar Park 1
BHS broke the ice on a scoreless game with a run in the fourth inning and never trailed in the contest.
In the fourth, Ronnie Scarbrough walked with one out and his courtesy runner, Austin Gerbes, moved to second on a ground out, Gerbes scored after an Eli Srp RBI single for the 1-0 lead, but Cedar Park tied it in the fifth with a solo homer from Mack Galindo.
In the bottom of the sixth, Josh Kory walked and Srp was hit by a pitch to put two runners on base with no outs. Cale Francis laid down a sac bunt to move the runners over a bag and then EJ Goolsby singled to right to bring in Gerbes and put the Greyhounds on top, 2-1.
In the seventh, Galindo walked and moved to second on a sac bunt. The next batter struck out and then the Greyhounds intentionally walked the next batter to put the force in play, but it didn’t matter after Shaver got the next batter to fly out to end it.
Hit were hard to come by and there were only 2 recorded by each. Both Srp and Goolsby had RBI singles and Gerbes scored both runs.
Srp picked up the win on the mound and gave up 2 hits, 1 run, 3 walks and struck out 4, while Shaver earned the save after tossing in the seventh. He walked 2, one intentionally, and didn’t give up a hit or run and struck out one.
