Merkens to represent BHS at state after winning girls 800 at regionals
SAN ANTONIO – Boerne High will be sending one athlete to this year’s 5A state track meet after Presley Merkens won the 800 during last Saturday’s Region IV-5A meet at Heroes Stadium.
Merkens, just a freshman, posted a time of 2:12.34 in the 800 to qualify for state to earn 10 team points. Her time beat the time set by Courtney Darter-Bruce at the 4A state meet in 1998 (2:12.78). Merkens also has the school record in the 400.
In the final girls standings, Boerne tied New Braunfels for eighth place with 24 points, while the boys didn’t point at regionals.
The top two finishers at regionals advance to state in each event and the thirdplace finisher has a chance at a wildcard spot.
Bella Pettet finished third in the long jump with a leap of 17-7.25 but didn’t advance as a wildcard. Pettet earned 6 points for her efforts.
The 4x200 relay of Bethanee Lozano, Victoria Varga, Maddie Freeman and Pettet teamed up for sixth with a time of 1:44.60 to earn 2 team points.
Sutton Amerman placed fourth in the 400 after posting a 58.67 for 4 team points and Mallory Miles finished fifth in the high jump after clearing 5-0 for 2 team points to round out the scoring.
State is scheduled for Thursday - Saturday, May 14-16, in Austin on the UT campus. The 5A state meet will be Friday, May 15.
