BOERNE — Daughters of the Republic of Texas’s mission, and the Joshua D. Brown Chapter presented two area graduating seniors with $1,500 scholarships at the spring luncheon on May 7 at Riverhill Country Club in Kerrville.
Receiving the Sarah Jane Goss Scholarship is Juliana Long, a senior at Champion High School in Boerne. She is the daughter of David and Danielle Long of Boerne.
Juliana is a four-year basketball letterman. She also was a member of the debate team, winning the All-Star Debater at the Baylor Summer Debate Program, and a member of the Honors program.
She also received the Champion Way Award, given to students who exemplify integrity, courage, and heart. She is an altar server at her church, volunteered at the San Antonio Food Bank, and served meals to military troops at Christmas.
Receiving the Joshua D. Brown Scholarship is Landry Rose Meyer, a senior at Blanco High School in Blanco. Landry is the daughter of Chad and Laura Meyer, granddaughter of DRT member Fayrene Craddock, and niece of DRT member Tammy Kneuper.
In her four years at Blanco High School, Landry had an impressive record of athletics, scholarship, and achievements. She was a varsity starter in volleyball and named to the All-District first team as well as offensive player of the year in her junior year. She was also a member of the varsity track team, a varsity softball team starter, earning 1st team All-District honors for three years, as well as Offensive Player of the Year in her sophomore and junior years.
She was a member of the National Honor Society, Fellowship of Christian Athletes, held various positions in Future Farmers of America (FFA), including livestock exhibitor at multiple stock shows throughout the state, all while working after school and on weekends and summers in several capacities. She received the Blanco County Youth Citizenship Award in her senior year. Landry plans to attend Texas Tech University in the fall, majoring in Agricultural Communications (Marketing and Photography).
Juliana holds memberships in the Champion High School Investment Club, the Speech and Debate Club, the Student Athlete Leadership Program, the Health Occupational Student Association, and Boerne Buddies, as a special needs peer partner. She was employed at D-Bat Boerne, an indoor baseball academy, and at Home Depot. Juliana will attend Baylor University in the fall, planning a double major in Finance and Economics.
The Joshua D. Brown Chapter is very proud to award these scholarships to two outstanding and deserving students, and we wish them the best as they pursue their goals in the future.
The chapter is pleased to announce that Gus Lockwood, an Ingram 7th grader, has won the Essay Contest for District VIII of the DRT. He was awarded a certificate and $100 for his outstanding work, and will be entered in the state contest, where statewide winners will be announced at the State Convention in Fort Worth at the end of May. The subject of the essay was “Flags of the Texas Revolution”.
Five new members were welcomed at the luncheon. They are Bella Bain, Holly Bain, Ginny Begnoche, Carole Marshall, and Katherine Watts. Barbara Cooledge was also welcomed as an associate member.
