Boerne Radio’s Ruiz entering S.A. Radio Hall of Fame

Boerne Radio’s Ruiz entering S.A. Radio Hall of Fame

Veteran local broadcaster is ‘The Voice of the Spurs’

All San Antonio Spurs fans know the game-time chant, “Two-o-o-o-o-o minutes; two-o-o-o-o-o minutes,” but most probably have no idea the man who’s been making that call for years works at Boerne Radio.

Roland Ruiz, the local station’s production manager, will be inducted into the San Antonio Radio Hall of Fame Aug. 8, a recognition honoring his decades of involvement in San Antonio-area broadcasts, officials said.

ROLAND RUIZ Ruiz, a staple on South Texas airwaves since landing his first job in 1981 with KBOB in Pleasanton, is more widely known as “The Voice of The Spurs” over the public-address system, making the announcements from his courtside seat at the Alamo City’s Frost Bank Center.

“I got a call a couple of months ago from the (San Antonio Radio Hall of Fame) president, and I did kind of go, ‘Are you sure?’” Ruiz said of his induction.

He added, “But it is incredibly humbling. There are so many people in (the Hall of Fame) that I looked up to while growing up. They were role models, without even knowing it.”

Boerne Radio’s Baron Wiley lured Ruiz out of retirement in May 2025, after having worked together for a dozen years for the Salem Media Group. Ruiz was there from November 2011 through December 2023.

“Yeah, Baron pulled me off the scrap heap last year, so here I am,” Ruiz joked.

In addition to being the Spurs’ public-address announcer, Ruiz is behind the mic for the San Antonio Missions. He’s also the arena announcer for the San Antonio Gunslingers football team and calls multiple sports for The University of the Incarnate Word and Texas State University.

The induction takes place in San Antonio.

Ruiz will become the third person associated with Boerne Radio to be added to the San Antonio Radio Hall of Fame, joining Wiley and radio legend Sonny Melendrez.

In his spare time, Ruiz loves 1950s and ‘60s rock ’n’ roll, even playing guitar in a band.

Boerne Radio, KBRN, is found on the dial at 103.9 FM and 1500 AM.

“It is incredibly humbling.”
