THE BOOKWORM

Summer Activity Challenge

Hundreds of readers of all ages have already signed up for this year’s Summer Reading Challenge and there’s still time to join the fun.

Participants can earn collectible dinosaur trading cards by completing reading and activity challenges throughout the summer. Registration is open to all ages and can be completed at the Youth Services desk or the Adult Services desk on the library’s second floor, where staff will provide everything needed to get started.

Young children who are not yet reading independently are encouraged to participate, with caregivers receiving credit for books read and activities completed together. Be sure to turn in completed reading challenges by July 24.

Ancient Animals

Travel back in time on Monday, July 13, at 9:30 a.m. with a special live animal program on the library’s back lawn.

Children and families will have the opportunity to meet and interact with fascinating animals whose ancient ancestors once shared the Earth with dinosaurs.

Rosie the reticulated python slithered on the back lawn last month, and this month, tortoises will be hanging out for the children to pet.

The animals for both programs were provided by Happy Tails Mobile Petting Zoo. This hands-on educational experience is perfect for all ages and offers a fun way to learn about these remarkable creatures. No registration is required.

Children’s Crafting

Children and their caregivers are invited to journey back to prehistoric times during Veloci-Crafters beginning at 3 p.m. July 16.

Participants will create their own, amber-inspired fossilized bug soap, and learn a little prehistoric science while making a fun keepsake to take home.

Recommended for children ages 5 and older, this hands-on program is limited to the first 50 participants. Tickets are available at the Youth Services desk before the program begins.

Speed Puzzling Competition

The library’s first Speed Puzzling Competition of the summer June 18 was a tremendous success, and another exciting event is just around the corner. Join us from 6-8 p.m. July 16 for an Independence Daythemed speed puzzling competition.

This fast- growing national hobby has gained popularity among participants of all ages, with individuals and teams racing against the clock to complete jigsaw puzzles using strategy, teamwork and a keen eye for detail.

Teams of up to four people are invited to compete for prizes while enjoying an evening of food and fun. To register, visit the library’s online calendar at boernelibrary.org, locate the July 16 event, and click the RSVP button to reserve your team’s spot.

Tall Tales at the Library

Think you can spot a tall tale? Join the Patrick Heath Public Library for the 8th annual Kendall County Liars Contest at 2 p.m. Saturday, July 18, in the library’s Community Room.

Poet and mystery author James R. Dennis returns as master of ceremonies as storytellers from across Texas compete for the coveted title of Kendall County’s Biggest and Best Liar. This entertaining afternoon of wit, humor and imaginative storytelling is free and open to the public.

Bone Voyage

The library’s Summer Learning Odyssey will conclude with a prehistoric celebration from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. July 25, featuring a day of dinosaur-themed fun for the entire family.

Visitors are invited to explore the Dinosaur George Traveling Exhibit, an interactive experience showcasing authentic dinosaur fossils and fascinating displays that bring the prehistoric world to life.

Guests can browse the fossil exhibit, visit the gift shop and attend a special presentation by Dinosaur George.

Whether you’re a lifelong dinosaur enthusiast or simply looking for a memorable family outing, this exciting finale offers something for all ages. Join us as we wrap up another unforgettable summer of reading, learning, and discovery. Bone Voyage — and start counting down to next summer.
