Gunman in underwear killed after confronting deputies

A gun-toting man clad in his underwear and standing in the street died after Kendall County deputies returned fire when he shot at them, authorities said.

The dead man was identified in a release issued by the Sheriff’s Office as Austin Hodo, a 2026 graduate of Geneva School of Boerne, and member of the Eagles football team. No other biographical details were available.

The case unfolded when deputies rushed to a call about an armed man at 4:55 a.m. Wednesday, July 8, in the 100 block of Bent Tree in the Bent Tree subdivision.

Law officers had received reports of a male in the roadway clad only in his underwear firing a weapon, according to a sheriff’s social media post.

While deputies were responding, a caller told a dispatcher the man fired a shot in his direction.

Within minutes, four deputies arrived in the subdivision, located the man and ordered him numerous times to drop his weapon, the news release stated.

According to investigators, the man refused to comply.

Instead, he continued advancing toward the deputies, raised the handgun and fired at them, the Sheriff’s Office said.

“In response, deputies discharged their firearms,” according to the sheriff’s post.

Struck by gunfire, the man fell to the ground. The deputies approached the individual and “immediately rendered aid,” but he perished at the scene, investigators said.

No peace officers were injured during the incident.

“This is a difficult time for everyone,” the sheriff’s release reads. “Our office asks if you are a person of faith, please pray for everyone affected by this incident.”

The case is still open and more information will be released “as the investigation permits,” deputies said.

The Sheriff’s Office also thanked “the Boerne Police Department, Boerne Fire Department and the Texas Department of Public Safety for their assistance and support during this incident.”
