The Boerne Little League baseball team just couldn’t get its offense going until late Thursday morning in its opening game at the Southwest Region tournament.
Boerne, the Texas West champions, opened the event against the Texas East champs Thursday morning in Waco, and fell to the East Texas team, 10-3, and didn’t score its three runs until the last inning.
Texas East opened with a two-run first frame for the quick 2-0 lead and added two more runs in the second to pull ahead 4-0. The East Texas team tacked on another run in the fifth and it was 5-0.
From there, Texas East blew it open with five runs in its last at bat in the top of the sixth to build a 10-0 lead. But despite being down 10-0, Boerne fought until the last out and scored three runs in the bottom of the sixth.
In the end, Boerne or Texas West, outhit Texas East, 7-5.
Boerne plays again Saturday and needs to win to stay alive in the double-elimination tournament. In fact, Boerne will need to win its next three games on Saturday, Sunday and Monday just to make it to the championship game on Tuesday, Aug. 11.
The two Texas teams, West and East, along with state champs from Oklahoma, Louisiana, Mississippi, New Mexico and Arkansas are in Waco for the Southwest Region tourney and the winner advances to the Little League World Series that starts Aug. 19 in Williamsport, Pennsylvania.
