COMFORT — Mix-Haus Gallery presents Lagniappe, a new exhibition of mixed media encaustic works by San Antonio artist Douglas Galloway, on view Aug. 28 through Sept. 27.
An opening reception will be held 2-6 p.m. Aug. 29. The exhibition will also be featured during the Comfort Art Festival from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sept. 19.
Galloway is widely recognized for his textural, often gridded, mixed media paintings that live in the spaces they occupy as two-dimensional sculpture. He imbues emotional depth and lived experience into his works in a way that invites viewers into a state of reflection.
Inspired by the colorful, weathered homes of New Orleans and the memories held within them, Lagniappe explores what it means to find — and remember — home. Drawing from Galloway’s years living in New Orleans during his twenties and thirties, the collection reflects on the ways a place can become part of us through color, music, architecture, community and everyday experience.
“There are places that shape us long after we’ve left them. For me, that place is New Orleans,” Galloway said.
“ This collection is less about the city itself than the memories it left behind,” Galloway said. “They’re impressions of warmth, belonging and the invisible stories that remain long after the people have gone.”
In New Orleans vernacular, lagniappe means “a little something extra”— an unexpected gift freely offered. For Galloway, the city itself became just such a gift.
Built through layers of paint, paper, wax, and other materials, the works echo the physical character of the structures that inspired them. Surfaces are built up, obscured, revealed, and altered, creating a visual parallel to the way memory itself changes over time.
