Tacoma, Wash (Northwest) edges Boerne (Southwest) in Little League World Series opener, 4-3

Tacoma, Washington (Northwest) edged Boerne (Southwest) in the Little League World Series opener Friday in Williamsport, Pennsylvania. 4-3.

Boerne trailed 4-3 going into the bottom of the 6th with no outs, but Northwest kept them off the board with two fielder's choice plays at the plate and a pop up to centerfield.

NW never trailed in the game and scored two runs in the first inning for the 2-0 lead but Boerne (SW) tied it by the second. Kase Yarbrough scored in the first and Anderson Paulson plated a run in the second innings and it was tied 2-2 at the end of two.

In the third, NW pushed in two more runs and pulled ahead 4-2 but Boerne (SW) cut into the lead in the fifth after Kasen Martinez doubled and later scored on a Paulson single and it was 4-3 going into the final inning of regulation.

Boerne's Merritt Cude pitched in the sixth and struck out the side on 10 pitches to take it to the bottom of the sixth.

Yarbrough doubled to start the inning, Walker Yost was hit by a pitch and Cude singled to load the bases with no outs, but the Northwest defense took over from there. Kasen Workman entered on the mound and induced two straight infielder grounders that resulted in outs at home plate on a couple of fielder's choice plays.

Carson Patrick came up for Boerne and hit a nice ball but it was caught in centerfield to end it.

Boerne plays Monday at 3 p.m.
