After more than two decades serving Boerne, City Secretary Lori Carroll will retire in early 2027, officials announced.
According to a prepared release, Carroll joined the city administrative staff in January 2003 as an assistant to the city manager. She was promoted to deputy city secretary later that year and became city secretary in July 2011.
A Boerne native who was born in a doctor’s hospital on Main Street and raised in the community, Carroll has spent more than 23 years serving her hometown, she said.
“I was fortunate enough to grow up in Boerne when it was a true small town, with one red light, one grocery store, one bank and one police officer,” Carroll said. “The Boerne pool was the place to be in the summer, life moved slower and neighbors looked out for each other.” She added, “Those experiences shaped who I am and gave me a lifelong appreciation for this special place that I have always been proud to call home.”
The city secretary is appointed by the city manager and ensures the municipality complies with federal, state and local requirements, including the Texas Open Meetings Act and Public Information Act.
“Lori has worked tirelessly for more than 20 years in service to the residents of Boerne, much of it behind the scenes,” City Manager Ben Thatcher said. “The role touches nearly every aspect of how our city government operates and reaches far beyond what the title suggests.”
According to Thatcher, Carroll’s knowledge and experience “have been invaluable to me and the city of Boerne.”
During her tenure, Carroll has documented hundreds of City Council meetings; maintained city records, minutes, ordinances and resolutions; coordinated council agendas and meeting packets; and ensured the proper posting of required public notices.
Spending the past two decades in City Hall administration, Carroll has had a front-row seat to watch the technology age invade Boerne, according to the city news release.
“When I began my career as city secretary, the job looked very different. It was largely focused on agendas, minutes, municipal elections and records,” Carroll said. “Now, with technology, it has greatly changed and expanded how we serve our governing bodies, staff and the community. But at its heart it remains the same, serving the residents who call Boerne home.”
Before joining the city, she spent nearly two decades working in the banking industry in Boerne and San Antonio.
In addition, Carroll previously was the secretary and treasurer of the Greater Boerne Chamber of Commerce and also treasurer of the Kendall County Child Services Board.
She and her husband, Marty, belong to St. Peter the Apostle Catholic Church.
