Boerne High hosted Laredo United Friday at Boerne ISD Stadium for its home opener and it turned into a wild one before the Greyhounds came up with a defensive stop to outlast the Longhorns, 41-34.
The Greyhounds remained unbeaten at 2-0 and will visit Davenport on Friday.
BHS held a 41-34 lead with less than a minute left after a Grant Sweeney 24-yard touchdown run, but Laredo United was driving and took the ball down to the Boerne 34.
Boerne's defense had been hurt by the Longhorns, especially in the first half, but on the biggest drive of the game, the Greyhounds came up with an interception to end it after Ronnie Brooks picked off a Longhorns pass with 18 seconds left.
After giving up 28 first-half points – 21 in the first quarter alone – Boerne’s defense only yielded six points in the second half and came up with the pick and turned the Longhorns away on two other drives after United went for it on 4th and 4 and 4th and 3 and didn’t convert.
It was a game of two distinct halves after both teams scored three touchdowns apiece in the first quarter for 42 combined points. The Hounds were up 31-28 at the half as the teams combined for 59 points in the first two quarters before it turned into a defensive struggle after halftime.
The Longhorns hit a 73-yarder on their first play from scrimmage to start the game before a short touchdown run capped the drive. Laredo United also recorded a 1-play, 60-yard TD pass, had a 3-play drive capped with a 57-yard touchdown pass and also connected on a 58-yard scoring strike – all in the first half.
Boerne showed big-play ability as well after Zach Freasier hauled in a 55-yard toss from Sweeney for a 1-play scoring drive. Freasier also snagged an 86-yard TD pass from Sweeney, while Jacob Hicks caught a short pass from Sweeney for another score.
Sweeney had a short TD run late in the second quarter and Diego Jimenez kicked a 30-yard field goal to give Boerne a 31-28 lead at the half. The first half alone had 14 possessions and nine ties or lead changes.
It turned into a more traditional ball game in the second half. Jimenez booted a 33-yarder to bump Boerne’s lead to 34-28 late in the third quarter.
The Greyhound defense kept the Longhorns off the board in the third, but Laredo United broke through and capped a 13-play drive with a short TD pass from Alex Martinez to Colt Lozano to tie it at 34-34.
United had a chance to take the lead but missed the extra point and it stayed tied at 34s with 3:09 left.
After the kickoff Boerne put together an unconventional drive and stuck to the ground game. The Hounds used eight straight run plays with Sweeney and Callan Combs carrying the rock.
On the one pass play they tried, the Hounds drew an interference call on a throw from Sweeney to Freasier. That gave Boerne a first down at the Longhorns 24-yard line. On the next play, a designed run play for Sweeney, the senior QB galloped into the end zone for the 41-34 lead with 48 seconds remaining. It was the 11th tie or lead change of the game.
The Longhorns moved the ball to the BHS 34 before Brooks picked off the Martinez pass. He fumbled on the return, but Brock Hierholzer jumped on the loose ball with 18 ticks on the clock to secure the win.
