The Boerne High tennis team had a fast start in their district tennis match with Boerne Champion on Tuesday at the Greyhound Courts, but the Chargers had the better finish and went on to claim the 10-9 victory.
Boerne was up 5-2 after doubles after they won three tiebreaker matches, but the Chargers got on track during singles play and won eight of the 12 singles matches to earn the victory.
At one point, the Greyhounds were up 9-7 with three matches on the court. Champion had to win all three and came through with the three victories to seal it.
The entire contest took almost five hours to complete since they needed all 19 matches and only had eight courts. It started at 4:30 p.m. and ended close to 9:30 p.m.
Greyhounds coach Tyson Stewart said it was a great high school match.
“That was fun; it stinks to lose, but that’s what high school tennis is about ... going 10-9 with a crosstown rival under the lights,” he said. “You aren’t going to get much better than that.”
Chargers coach Kristin Cantu gave credit to her team for fighting back after being down 5-2.
“ The team pulled together; they all believed and showed the heart of a good team,” she said. “We knew it was going to be an uphill battle and that was tough, but the kids did great.”
Even though his team didn’t win, Stewart said he was proud of the effort his players showed after getting beat by Alamo Heights in their previous match, 16-3.
“We played way better than we did against Alamo Heights, which I was proud of,” he said. “If we had played like we did against Heights and come out uninspired, it would have been really bad, so we’ll take it.”
With the match tied at 9-9, there was one match left and it was a winnertake all at No. 6 boys singles. The teams from both sides, along with family and friends, were lined up around the fence to watch that one match.
Champion’s Liam Termeer claimed the win to give the Chargers the victory. It was an extra special win for Termeer because it was his birthday and Cantu gave him credit for winning with the spotlight on him.
“He knew before he went on the court, he knew it was going to come down to him, so he was mentally preparing before he got on the court,” she said. “All year, he’s been telling me that he wanted to play singles and how important it is to be in the lineup, and this showed how much he really wanted it.”
Cantu credited Boerne High for playing them tough.
“Their doubles teams were good and they had us sweating. There was no easy match, there were a lot of tough battles,” she said. “You never know when Boerne plays Champion. The emotions get into it, and everybody knows each other and it’s a different match than playing outside of Boerne. You never know how it’s going to go.”
Over the last two years, Boerne and Champion have met in the third round of the playoffs, and Stewart said he hopes that’s the case again this season.
“I told the team, ‘Remember how this feels,’” he said. “Hopefully we’ll get another shot at them, we’ll prepare for that.”
Champion’s win snapped a three-match losing streak to the Greyhounds after Boerne won the regular season match and beat the Chargers again in the playoffs in 2025, and also won their playoff match in 2024. Their series is tied 3-3 all-time.
The Chargers improved to 15-1 overall and 5-0 in district. They’ll host Alamo Heights on Tuesday for the district title. After their match with the Mules, they’ll host Johnson on Oct. 2, in a non-district match before starting the playoffs as either the No. 1 or No. 2 seed out of the district.
The Greyhounds slipped to 7-5 overall and 3-2 in district. They hosted Churchill in a non-district match on Friday and then close out league play on Tuesday against John Jay at the NISD Annemarie Tennis Center. They’ll also play Wimberley in a non-district match on Oct. 2 before starting the playoffs and are locked in as the No. 3 seed from 26-5A.
