Boerne Champion picked up a few non-district water polo matches last Saturday as they prep for what they hope is a long playoff run.
Champion was at Alamo Heights on Saturday and the boys and the girls played three matches each in San Antonio.
The Lady Chargers have won the last two regional titles and the Champion boys have won four straight regional crowns. After a few more non-district matches they’ll begin the playoffs in October and hope to repeat as regional champs.
On the boys side, Champion defeated Strake Jesuit, 18-8, doubled up Alamo Heights, 16-8, and then lost to Austin Westlake, 9-5, to stand at 19-4 overall.
Against Strake Jesuit, EJ Altermatt had a strong match and finished with 7 goals, Julius Hoxhaj recorded 6 goals against the Mules and Altermatt finished with 3 of their 5 goals against Westlake.
The Lady Chargers doubled up St. Agnes Academy, 16-8, edged Alamo Heights, 15-12, and lost to Westlake, 9-3, and stand at 10-3 overall.
Champion’s match with St. Agnes was close in the first half and the Chargers were losing 5-3, but they outscored their opponents in the second half, 13-3. Olivia Dunn finished with 5 goals in the match.
Breanna Hempton had a strong match against Alamo Heights and tallied 10 of their 15 goals.
The Chargers didn’t manage a goal in the second half in their 9-3 loss to Westlake and received two goals from Hempton.
