The Boerne High football team tallied a season-high 63 points as they rolled to a 63-35 win over Long Creek Thursday at BISD Stadium.
The Hounds had eight offensive possessions in the first half and scored eight touchdowns, while the defense came up with three interceptions in the half to give Boerne’s offense great starting field position.
BHS coach Brett Sawyer said his team is improving and feels like their best football is yet to come but admitted that Thursday's performance was the closest they’ve come to a complete game.
“We’re getting there, we’re not there yet, but we’re getting closer. We’ve got a long way to go, but I’m happy with the progress,” he said. “We’re getting better each week and we’re still on the upswing, that’s a good thing, but we haven’t peaked yet. We don’t know how good we can be and we’re trying to figure that out.”
Boerne had a fast start and scored 28 points in the first quarter, thanks to two Callan Combs touchdowns, one on a run and the other on a Grant Sweeney pass. Zach Freasier and Jacob Hicks also caught touchdown passes from Sweeney in the first quarter.
Two of those TDs were set up by interceptions from Rory Hotchkin and Karter Wolff as BHS scored on drives of 3 plays, 1 play and 3 plays.
“I was very happy with most of what happened in the first half,” Sawyer said. “I was happy with the score, but not happy with some of the execution.”
One of the plays Sawyer wasn’t happy about was a 65-yard run into the end zone for the Dragons to get on the board and make it 28-7 by the end of the first quarter.
The Hounds kept up the pressure in the second stanza and tacked on four more scores in the period. Combs, who had four touchdowns coming into the game, reached that total by halftime after he scored two more times on run plays in the quarter to match the two TDs he had in the first period.
One of the Combs' TD runs was set up by a hook-and-ladder play that lineman Parker Young ran down to the 1-yard line before he was pushed out.
Logan Kolle added a 6-yard run for a touchdown for BHS set up by a Brock Hierholzer interception, but right before the half, the Dragons scored on a 49-yard pass from Eddie Wadas to Coy White with 18 seconds left.
On the ensuing kickoff, Hotchkin returned the ball to the Dragons’ 41 to give the Hounds another chance at a score with 14 seconds on the clock.
Sweeney went deep and found Freasier on a 59-yard bomb with two ticks on the clock for his fourth passing TD of the night. After Diego Jimenez booted his eighth extra point of the half, it was 56-14 at intermission.
Boerne’s starters didn’t play in the second half and BHS was outscored 21-7. Long Creek scored a touchdown on an 11-yard Michael Martinez run and then recovered an onside kick and scored again after Tabias Collazo took it to the house on a short run and the Dragons had tallied two TDs in 47 seconds.
The Dragons tried one more onside kick and recovered it, but illegal contact was called on the play, and they had to kick it again and booted it deep this time. Sawyer said his team was struggling at that point and he could have put the starters back in but wanted the players on the field to figure it out.
“In games like this, you give them the opportunity to prove they can play,” he said. “That’s why I don't believe in pulling everybody out and putting starters back in. Let’s work through this and give them the chance to get better.”
Boerne’s best drive of the night may have come in the fourth quarter for their only points of the half. The Dragons went for it on fourth and 2 at the BHS 3-yard line but were stuffed by the Greyhound defense. Boerne took over on the 2-yard line and marched 98 yards on just five plays to a score.
On that drive, Logan Kolle scampered for 52 yards and then Taydon Eamello hit Lane Aaron on a 40-yard pass as the Greyhounds tallied 92 yards on those two plays before Kolle punched it in and Brady Guerreo kicked the extra point to wrap up the Boerne scoring.
