Veterans aid grants going out

AUSTIN — Applications are open for an estimated $31 million in Fund for Veterans’ Assistance (FVA) grants, administered by the Texas Veterans Commission (TVC). Nonprofit organizations and local government agencies that provide direct services to veterans may apply.

“Texas stands with the men and women who wore the uniform,” Gov. Greg Abbott said Monday, in declaring the fund open for applicants. “These grants put $31 million in the hands of local organizations that deliver housing, mental health care, job training, and other direct services to veterans and their families. Texas will always honor those who answered the call.”

The grant term for the 2028 funding period is 24 months. Awards range from a minimum of $50,000 to a maximum of $600,000. An applicant may apply for and receive up to three grants.

A county government may receive up to four grants, including a Veteran Treatment Court grant.

The application portal opened Oct. 2 and will remain open through 5 p.m. Dec. 2, 2026.

“Through our Fund for Veterans’ Assistance, we have seen first-hand how local organizations change lives and the impact these grants can have,” said TVC Chairwoman and Navy veteran Laura Koerner, a Fair Oaks Ranch resident. “It is not just about funding. It is about partnership, and communities that come together. Every grant extends our mission so that no veteran stands alone when it comes to home repair, mental health resources, trade skills, and other vital services.”

Since 2009, TVC has awarded more than $400 million through more than 1,790 FVA grants.

The announcement follows TVC’s 2026 Grants Across Texas tour. TVC Commissioners and staff presented more than $40 million in FVA grants to 160 organizations that serve veterans from El Paso to Beaumont.
