TxDOT to discuss Texas 46 upgrades next month

Texas Department of Transportation officials will be in town Nov. 10 to provide an update for the Texas 46 West safety project.

Precinct 1 Commissioner Jennifer McCall Tuesday told her Kendall County Commissioners Court colleagues about the 6:30 p.m. session at the Patrick Heath Public Library, 451 N. Main St.

The county and the state highway department are partners in efforts to improve the problem-plagued roadway.

McCall Oct. 13 also summarized a timeline that led to the court’s designation of $100,000 to support improvements planned for Webster’s Corner — the site of some of the state highway’s most severe crashes — including “Jersey barriers,” crash cushions, pavement widening and guard fence work at that curve.

The funds, set aside in the county’s 2026-27 budget, were the first local monies committed to the 46 West safety project and the first formal Kendall County–TxDOT partnership on the corridor.

A meeting in April drew comments from more than a dozen Kendall County residents who spoke about the perils motorists face when navigating the 11-mile stretch of road between Interstate 10 and Texas 16 near Bandera.

At a September gathering, McCall said TxDOT planned to start work on Webster’s Corner in September 2027, a date commissioners hope can be moved up.

Fatal crashes along 46 West from Boerne to Bandera County have intensified calls for safety improvements on the two-lane roadway.

TxDOT figures show 550 reported crashes between 2016 and March 2026, including 10 fatal wrecks that killed 13 people and left 44 others injured.

Eight of the crashes involved head-on collisions, prompting local officials to press for changes to a roadway they say is inadequate for current traffic volumes and speeds.

Ten of those 13 deaths occurred within the past five years.
