Nonprofit aligns funds for camp safety program

KERRVILLE — The Safety Navigator, a national nonprofit dedicated to making safety free and accessible for youth camps, has announced a $287,500 grant from the Community Foundation of the Texas Hill Country (CFTHC), awarded through the Kerr County Flood Relief Fund in support of The Safety Navigator’s Camp Safety programs.

The Safety Navigator was founded in the aftermath of the July 4, 2025, floods, one of the deadliest flood disasters in Texas history. The tragedy claimed lives across the Hill Country community, including children and staff at camps along the Guadalupe River. As Texas lawmakers came together to pass new youth camp safety legislation, The Safety Navigator’s founders built the organization to help Hill Country camps, and camps across the country, translate that legislation into practical, real-world action, so camp gates could open safely and confidently for the summer 2026 season and beyond.

The grant launches a dedicated, locally led Hill Country camp safety program that builds new resources with camps in the region, tests them in the field, and then makes them freely available to camps across the country.

Funded activities include: * End-of-season after-action reviews with Hill Country camp leaders to capture what worked and what needs strengthening * A comprehensive safety training program for camp directors, leadership, and seasonal staff, covering material risks such as aquatics, transportation, and emergency response * A Transportation Safety Toolkit addressing vehicle use, staff driving rules, and vetting bus and charter companies * A Hill Country edition of The Safety Navigator’s AI-assisted risk assessment tool, adding region-specific risk categories and controls * A Hill Country Drill Package, including new drills and facilitated tabletop exercises built around region-specific hazards * An AI-powered Emergency Action Plan builder to coach camps through building a robust and custom emergency response plan * A Summer Content Series capturing and sharing the safety work underway across Hill Country camps * A locally hired Hill Country Program Coordinator, giving every camp in the region a single, knowledgeable point of contact Every program is delivered free to participating camps.
