After taking a year off, the “Back the Badge 5K” makes its official return Saturday.
Hundreds of runners and walkers are expected Oct. 31 for the resumption of the run/walk, which supports the Boerne Police Department.
It’s sponsored by the Boerne Police Foundation, a nonprofit formed to facilitate donations of money and resources to benefit law enforcement officers and their families.
“Back the Badge is about bringing our community together,” the Police Foundation website states. “By registering, participating, volunteering, donating or simply coming out to support the event, you are helping continue our mission of supporting Kendall County law enforcement agencies and the men and women who serve our community.”
Race day registration begins at 6:15 a.m. at the Kendall County Fairgrounds, where the race begins and ends. Opening ceremonies are 7 a.m. and both the run and the walk begin after the observance.
The race kicks off at the Kendall County Fairgrounds on dirt, before continuing down the paved Rails for Trails No. 9 Line and eventually entering the walkable trails of the Cibolo Nature Center.
The course was selected specifically to give participants a variety of surfaces while showcasing the scenic Hill Country, according to planners.
Well-mannered, leashed dogs and strollers are welcome, but both are asked to yield to runners coming from behind.
The award presentation includes Overall Awards, Masters awards and agegroup awards.
Participants will receive a “Back the Badge” T-shirt and Finisher Medal.
A $10 entry fee will be collected before the event starts.
Back the Badge will be held rain or shine.
