THE BOOKWORM

Patrons who live on the south end of town will now have the convenience of dropping off checked out items in our new book drop.

Located in the Boerne Police Department parking lot located at 124 Old San Antonio Road, library patrons can either drive or walk up to book drop. Library staff and volunteers will be checking it at least once each day.

We hope this will make it more convenient for you. And don’t worry, the police won’t harass you about overdue items.

Makerspace for the Family

Become a “star” at our November Makerspace as we craft paper and aluminum stars. Alison will demonstrate how to make stars from recycled cans, cardstock, and old book pages.

This fun craft is great for all ages, and perfect for holiday decorating. We’ll meet Wednesday, Nov. 1, 6-7:30 p.m. in the library’s community room.

Magical History Tour

The Kendall County Historical Commission is unveiling a Texas Historical Commission marker at the historic Wren Cemetery. A post-Civil War African American cemetery, it was named for a former slave, Alex Wren, who owned the land upon which the cemetery is plotted.

Located in our Spring Creek region, the Wren Cemetery is one of the largest private cemeteries in Kendall County, containing 122 gravesites and 68 headstones. The ceremony will be held at the cemetery’s entrance Saturday, Oct. 28, beginning at 10 a.m. on 50 Spring Creek Road.

New Books

In the past two weeks we’ve added quite a few new books.

In our non-fiction section you can check “Proof Of Life: 7 Reasons to Believe There is an Afterlife” by Raymond Moody; “Build the Life You Want: The Art and Science of Getting Happier” by Arthur C. Brooks; a biography called “The Butchering Art: Joseph Lister’s Quest to Transform the Grisly World of Victorian Medicine” by Lindzey Fitzharris; and “American Prometheus: the Triumph and Tragedy of J. Robert Oppenheimer” by Kai Bird.

In fiction we have Jo Nesbo’s “The Night House,” “Holding Pattern” by Jenny Xie, and “Roman Stories” by Jhumpa Lahiri. In mystery, you can read the second of Sandra Kitt’s series, “The Time of Your Life”; and in romance, try Linda Lael Miller’s holiday book, “Christmas Painted Pony Creek” and Danielle Steel’s “Second Act.”

If you’d like to discover all the new items we’ve added to our collection, just visit our website and click on the “Catalog” tab. Then toward the bottom of the screen you will see the “What’s Hot” box.

Additionally, you can discover more about the books on our shelves by being on the lookout for our “Suggested Books” resource. You’ll find a list of eight to 10 interesting books you may or may not be aware of. Just check for the list at the Front Desk or at the 2nd floor information desk.

Our Own Election

We’ve come to the time of year when we start voting on what books and topics we want to discuss in the coming year. If you’re interested in participating in one of our groups, be sure to check out the news lists of each group. They’ll be published by early December.

We offer discussions on several genres including poetry, literary fiction, mysteries, and non-fiction. The groups are all open to the public and we welcome new members.

Gallery Exhibits

You still have time to enjoy the beautiful handwork of the Cibolo Creek Quilters’ Guild in our first-floor gallery. The exquisite quilts will be hanging until the end of October.

In November, St. Peter the Apostle Catholic Church is displaying photos and other memorabilia to celebrate its 100th birthday, which is coming up in December.

Library Closure

The library will be closed Friday, Nov. 10, in observance of Veterans Day. However, we will be open on Saturday, Nov. 11. We encourage you to reflect on your own veterans’ service to our country and be sure to thank them.
