Greyhounds finally at home for a spell

After playing five of its first six games on the road, the Boerne High football team is finally home for a good stretch.

The Greyhounds will have a three-game home stand during the Month of October that starts this Friday against Memorial.

Kickoff is set for Friday at BISD Stadium, 7 p.m.

BHS coach Che Hendrix said his team is ready to play a few games before a local crowd.

“We’re excited to be home and not get on a bus,” he said.

Not only have the Greyhounds been on the road for most of the season so far – their only home so far has been for homecoming Sept. 15 against Gregory-Portland – but they’ve been far trips to Corpus Christi, Salado, Uvalde and Pleasanton.

On top of that, the Greyhounds had to get on a bus to practice at BSMN and at Champion in early August when new turf was getting installed so they’ve been on the road for a good spell. They also had both scrimmages this year on the road.

Hendrix added that it was just how the sched- ule worked out this year. Boerne’s game with Antonian Sept. 8 was supposed to be at home but they swapped venues with the Apaches because the San Antonio school had light issues at their stadium last year so the game was played in Boerne, which meant they had to play at Antonian this year to make it five of six on the road to start this season.

“It is what it is, I thought our guys handled it great. We didn’t dwell on it and just did what we had to do,” Hendrix said. “Now we get a couple in a row at home and get into a good stretch at home.”

The Greyhounds opened district play last Friday at Uvalde and are coming off a 35-14 win at the Honey Bowl. They are 5-1 overall and 1-0 in league play.

Boerne was up 28-0 at halftime against the Coyotes and then took its foot off the gas pedal and went into ball-control mode to work on the clock in the second half.

BHS scored the first touchdown of the third and then the Coyotes finished it out with two TDs to get on the board.

After a TJ Dement TD to start the scoring, Hank Hendrix threw touchdown passes to Hutson Hendrix, Adam Hicks, McCoy Bruce and Michael Igbo.

Hank Hendrix completed passes to seven different receivers and went 10 for 15 for 307 yards and 4 TDs. The Greyhounds did most of its damage through the air and only rushed for 52 yards.

Defensively, Dylan Perez came up with a couple of interceptions to thwart the Coyotes.

Memorial is struggling and is 1-5 this year. They dropped their district opener to Fredericksburg last Friday, 49-6, to start district at 0-1. Their lone win so far came to Austin Navarro, 12-7.

Hendrix said the Minutemen will run the ball a lot and try to shorten the game.

“They try to eat clock and run the ball, they use a triple option attack,” he said. “They mix it with a shotgun look and have a good quarterback and running back.”

The coach said they need to attack Memorial and jump out to a big lead.

“The best way to play those teams is to play with a lead and try to get out to a fast start,” he said. “Getting a big lead is a big advantage against a team like that.”
